I was talking to my Dad, who by the way has seen more Husker football than I
have; he was born in 1928 and actually came to Nebraska in a covered wagon.
He was talking about some real bad years before Devaney made some changes in
the late 60's. He also mentioned that we have gotten use to, perhaps lucky
with the coaching staff and upper management team we have had in the
football program since the 70's.
But he pointed out that the rest of our sports teams are getting a lot
better; we are competing in sports that in the past we just showed up for or
made a token appearance. Unfortunately our football program appears to be a
house of cards and I think the players are loosing any wholesale belief in
themselves or the program. I saw BC during the game with his headset off,
standing alone staring into space like a lost child. I would love to be a
fly on the wall at the coaches meeting after that game. I would get all the
breakables and heavy objects out of the room first.
I am most concerned with the players, I know they hear the rumblings of the
fans and I know they see the scoreboard. They are going to start blaming
each other or themselves and it is going to take a strong competent coaching
staff to bring them together. I have no confidence with the coaching staff
as it stands right now; I have no answers so I am not going to pretend like
I have any answers. I do want to let the players know that I am still a fan
and a supporter of the team. I know they are not going out there every week
to loose, but I don't think they have any strong leaders on the team and
Keller can't win the game by himself.(I mention Keller, there are many more
who I could also mention)
I see a lot of talent out there on the field each week but no one has taught
them how to play as a team and they are all trying to hard to win the game
as individuals and they are missing there mark. They have all the
ingredients of a good solid program; they just don't have any direction. I
believe they can make something out this year's season if the coaching staff
pulls there head out of the sand and really looks at what they are doing.
Lastly the team needs fire and excitement. They have no sense of urgency or
motivation that can be seen by the viewing public, they almost appear sad or
tired.
