The type of running back also determines the type of PL that is
recruited/developed. A big bruising RB (Buckhalter, Phillips, Rozier)
who can take a seam an power through a hole with a huge head of steam,
works great behind a OL of 330+ lb behemoths. Typically then you are
doing zone blocking (hit the guy closest to you), don't let a DL or LB
get a square hit on the RB and expect the RB to power through.
Small fast guys (old pro fans remember Tony Dorsett), need a different
type of line. Traps and pulling Guards/Tackles (Wiegert and Stai of
pipeline 1 pulled a great deal) need to be able to get out on the
corner and seal off the D. The RB either then takes the corner if they
can make it, or cuts back if the D over pursues.
One final point that is a major different is the amount of down field
blocking by the WR. OL and RB get into and through the hole. To hope to
break longer runs, you muct have WRs dropping CBs and Ss deep in the
secondary. Watch a TO coached team and see how many times, each play, a
WR is making a block on a DB, small WRs like Brendan Holbein and
Clester Johnson consistently made big blocks down field. It is much
easier to beak a long one with no DBs to worry about. Watch the games
now and see how many you see.
