I can grant you that, he wasn't a total loss.  Other programs within the
Department did well, and facilities were built that were needed and they
enhance the football program.  And if he had left it at that, he may have
gone down in history along side the Bobfather as a true demigod of
Nebraska.  But he meddled where he shouldn't have.  He thought, probably
quite genuinely, that he had the right idea about how to restore prominence
to the meal ticket for the Department, the economic engine.  But that went
badly for him.  He made some rather poor choices in personnel.  And he
changed the system from a family-style organization to a corporation-like
business.  That apparently was not widely appreciated by lots of folks.  So,
despite his good deeds, as the AD, the blame falls on him for the boo-boos.
Just like the choices for assistance coaches are the responsibility of the
head coach, the buck has to stop at the AD desk for other choices.  And with
some of the choices he made in remaking the Department at Nebraska, I'm sort
of surprised Pitt took him back.  Better the Devil you know????
