I agree with Mike, Jeff nailed this one.
I do want to offer my thoughts about Turner Gill, and ask a question
that I haven't seen discussed.
First, I have to say I'm definitely in favor of wins for the Husker
football team. I also place great value on integrity and doing the
right thing. My preference would be to have a football program that
succeeds in both areas, but if I had to pick one over the other the
wins would go. If principles are compromised for winning, it just
doesn't matter any more.
When Pederson fired Solich, my interest in the sport noticeably
dimmed. The reasons Greg Mays gave applied for me, but I also think
the principles suffered--illustrated initially by the way the firing
was handled, but more recently by some of the information on
management styles that has come out. Having Tom Osborne involved
again has substantially restored my interest, and I have to think
that the integrity TO brings is a large part of it.
It seems to me that Turner Gill would bring the right spirit to the
Nebraska program--and by spirit I mean more than excitement or
energy. It probably sounds sappy, but The phrase "renew a right
spirit within me" comes to mind. Turner strikes me as an upright
man who would do that for the whole program.
A few days ago Mike Nolan noted that more coaching years would have
built more contacts for finding potential assistant coaches, but I
wonder if Tom Osborne's contacts may help fill this gap--which is
probably small to begin with.
My question has to do with the last year or so that Turner was here.
As I recall, he was named Assistant Head Coach when Solich made his
final year coaching changes. Given that, it seems perhaps a bit odd
that Gill was *not* named the interim coach for the final game after
Solich was fired. Does anyone recall hearing any rationale for
choosing Pelini?
Also, I seem to remember that Gill's leaving Nebraska after one
season under Callahan was his own choice. At the time I thought he
had given it a go, and decided it wasn't a good fit. Now I have to
wonder how much of it was Gill's recognition that his values didn't
fit well with those of the new administration.
Count me as one who would love to see Turner Gill hired as head
coach. Gives me a little shiver inside just thinking about it.
