Its interesting that I had the similar thought this last weekend after the
firing.  What we've had is a long period with almost no turnover in the
coaching staff.  Say what you will about some of the other long-timers in
coaching (Penn St. and Florida St. come to mind), there does seem to be some
benefit to having a staff that commits to the program longer than next
year.  Not only in annual recruiting, but also in the consistency and the
sense of permanency the program gains in the minds of the fans, the media,
and the players.  It hit me when I heard an interview with a former player
on Sunday who mentioned that they felt unattached to the program, and felt
they had little to offer the current team.  I think I'd like to hire someone
with the intention of being here for longer than the next phone call from
the NFL.  But how you hire for that is beyond me.  Is money the ultimate
commitment; you stay as long as the money is good, or can't get better
elsewhere?  I hope not.
