>>Oh for God's sake Bob, Tom Osborne will be here until he feels the
football program has been fixed. In other words, he will be here as
long as he deems neccessary. The label is "interim" but what you're
arguing over is really nothing more than semantics. Tom Osborne is the
athletic director right now, and nobody (except for possibly yourself)
thinks he is going to disappear into the night as quickly as he came.
He will be here for a while. Get used to it.<<
All I know is when he came in there were no promises made by Perlman or
Osborne either one publicly how long he would be the AD. I don't think
he is going to leave the office as soon as he hires a football coach.
But, I doubt he is here 10 years either. The response I gave was in
response to to the statement about a coach coming here specifically
because TO was the AD. The other thing is TO is not a young man
anymore. He is 70 years old with a history of heart problems. One
never knows what the future holds. I have the utmost respect and
admiration for the man. I just don't believe he is perfect. He can
make a bad hire as well as anyone. Just remember he endorsed Steve
Pederson as AD.
>>There are plenty of schools who would fire a coach over two losing
seasons in a 4 year span. There is nobody in the national media
questioning whether this was the right move, and there are no coaches
who are coming to Callahan's defense and screaming that he got a raw
deal. The same was not true when Solich was dismissed after a 9-3
season and a .750+ winning percentage in his entire career.<<
I never one time said it was the wrong move. I just said it demonstrated
TO is not afraid to fire someone when certain won/loss standards aren't
met. I am not sure what other coaches and the media have anything to do
with anything but ok. I think everyone saw it coming so what IS there to
say. Solich was not dismissed because of his 9-3 season or his won/lost
percentage but people keep hammering on that.
>>Whether you would like to admit it or not, Nebraska is still a
traditional powerhouse (ranked 8th in winning percentage) with success
that is far from a distant memory (it was only 6 years ago they were
playing for a national championship in the Rose Bowl). The facilities
are top notch, and the fan support is hard to beat.<<
What you say is true and why I wouldn't admit it I have no idea. And, it
was true four years ago and we just about couldn't hire a coach. I don't
argue with any of what you say above. As a matter of fact I never said
anything to the contrary. I said to say NU is the most storied football
team in the history of college football may be over the top but I don't
deny it is a great program. There are other great ones out there as
well. The great thing is the rise to greatness and the maintaining of
greatness was all within my lifetime. I saw Devaney's first year here
and right up to the current. Right now I just think there are more
attractive jobs out there than NU. I don't see any reason NU can't hire a
quality guy. I just don't see dozens of coaches in the nation just
panting and drooling after the NU job. For the Pellini fans out there if
Bo's choice comes down to LSU or NU I would think he'll be staying in the
Bayou assuming NU doesn't make him an offer he can't refuse.
>>Even despite all of the rumblings, Nebraska still managed to sell out every
>> game of the
Callahan era. Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame, and LSU couldn't say the
same during their down years. There are certainly a lot of overzealous
and crazy Husker fans, but I still think it's less of an issue than at
other schools.<<
We'll never know but I wonder if the continue packing of Memeorial
Stadium was because the greater share of fans believed Callahan would be
gone at the end of the year. Again, we'll never know but I seriously
doubt the sellouts would continue if this would have gone on 2-3 more
years with no end in sight.
