Well perhaps not figuratively, but IMHO there are dozens of
well-qualified individuals who will listen with interest to whatever
Nebraska has to say.

Bo Pelini is one of them, though I believe he will have more than one offer
on his plate at some time between now and the 2nd week in January. (If
anything, yesterday's loss might make it easier for LSU to let Bo go
or make it easier for Les Miles to jump to Michigan before January.)

While watching yesterday's games, someone asked me why Bo would even
consider taking the Nebraska job:

My answer applies to nearly everyone who might get short-listed:

1. The job is still one of the top jobs in the country.

2. The money is very good, and a successful coach will become a demigod.
Make a list of the people in Nebraska who earn $1.5 million or more
a year and who have their names and pictures in nearly every paper in
the state dozens of times during the year. It won't be very long.

3. Ego. People who aspire to be head coaches have egos the size of
Memorial Stadium. Many such individuals will see Nebraska as a
nearly irresistable challenge to be mastered. (And regardless of
the assessment of the self-proclaimed 'talent experts', I suspect
Nebraska has enough talent in-house to win 9 or more games next year
    under the right leadership.)

4. In Bo's case, there's the additional factor of having gotten little
more than a 'drop dead' interview the last time around (I wouldn't call
it a 'courtesy'.) Now that SP is gone, proving he was the right coach
for the job in the first place might be too much of an opportunity
for him to say no to.

Factors #1 and #2 probably weigh against a few choices. I doubt Urban
Meyers would have any interest, for example. He's got a job that is in
the same tier as Nebraska (if not slightly better these days) and probably
pays a bit better. Whether Rich Rodriguez would be willing to leave
West Virginia (where he can be king of the hill for as long as he wants,
as long as he doesn't lose 7 games in a season too often) for a somewhat
better job and POSSIBLY somewhat better money is a toughie, I suspect
he'll decline if asked to apply/interview, unless factor #3 comes into
play.

>From Nebraska's point of view, there's the 'wow' factor to consider.
NONE of the identified candidates the last time around had much wow
factor. I suspect that won't be true this time around, but I also think
the final choice may not be the person with the biggest wow factor.
