I don't think it was Tom's ego either but I was one of the few that
disagreed with him on that call. If that was a regular season game
especially early in the season I would have agreed with Tom totally.
But I think when you get to that point you have to assess what you have
to do in accordance with the season as an entirety. Back in 1984 there
was no overtime in College football. You could still end the game in a
tie. The ring was within grasp. Miami had to WIN that game to win the
title. If NU tied or won it was NU's title. TO did not have to win the
game to be the National Champion. If that would have been the case I
also would have agreed with TO. But, he did not have to take the risk
he took.
With that said I don't believe ego had one thing to do with it. I
think TO just believed any game any time you go for the win. He
followed that line of thought and Miami was the Champ. I remember
screaming at the TV when I saw them line up for two "what are you
doing?" But, also just because I disagreed with TO didn't cause me to
lose respect for him. He is still among the greatest coaches ever and
arguably THE greatest.
