Good point. If the Huskers had a good/great defense over the past four
years, BC's record would be somewhere near even for those games. That would
put him better than Solich, and about even with Osborne.
I'm not doubting a bit that Cosgrove is doing an absolutely terrible job and
needs to be released. I do doubt that the offense is doing poorly.
I see two trends.
1. Solich's first 4 seasons he had a great offense...with Osborne's
players. His last two seasons showed that the offense (and thus the
program) was going downhill.
2. Callahan completely revised the offense and is just now getting to
completely play his recruits. To me, it's amazing that it wasn't
worse...especially over the first 3 years. With Ganz as QB, it does look
like the offense is very effective. I see the offense (and thus the
program) returning to greatness.
With a better defense, this team would have been in the top 20, if not the
top 10.
I'm not sold that Callahan needs to go. He's not very good in front of a
microphone (neither was Osborne, especially if he shared the TV time with
Switzer), but that doesn't mean he can't coach. He did make
adjustments...OL personnel, RB's...on offense. He also moved Watson to the
sideline...great move, I think. He has made a bad choice with Cosgrove,
though.
I think that if Cosgrove goes, BC should get one more year. If he refuses
to let Cosgrove depart, then he should be fired.
