The only way to say this is...........NO!
I do not want Callahan in charge of hiring the next defensive
coordinator because he botched it so badly the first time. He hired
Cosgrove simply because he was a good friend, not because of his
performance at Wisconsin. Furthermore, he has neglected to do anything
about it to this point!
Callahan had plenty of chances to dump Cosgrove, and he chose to stick
with a sinking ship. No competent coach would have stuck with Cosgrove
for this long. He should have been given the boot after the first
season (2004) when NU finished 56th in total defense and 71st in scoring
defense. Craig Bohl, a respected coach who was an 8-year assistant at
NU got the boot for a similar performance in 2002 (55th in total defense).
If that wasn't enough reason to let him go, 2006 saw Nebraska finish
56th in total defense. Again, this ranks *below* the performance that
got Craig Bohl canned in 2002. Yet, Callahan refused to make any
changes and that got us to where we are today. Nebraska is currently
ranked 112th in total defense. I believe they have been below 80th
since the Ball State game. At the very least, changes should have been
made in the middle of this season. There is absolutely no way that
Nebraska could have done any worse if an assistant was appointed on an
interim basis. At the very least it would have sent a message that this
performance is completely unacceptable at any level of football. This
is what Texas Tech did and their defense currently sits at 47th (which
is at least servicable, even if it's not good by Nebraska's standards).
There is absolutely no reason to believe that Callahan can make a good
defensive hire, and there is absolutely no reason that NU should give
him that chance.
And all of this talk about the offense performing great is humorous.
One game against an awful KSU team that will likely finish with a losing
record is not indicative of a great offense. Where was this offense
during the losses to Missouri, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M an extremely
important part of the schedule that saw the Huskers goes 0-4 in October?
Callahan will be gone at season's end and nobody will miss him. Let him
"learn" his offense somewhere else.
