[Husker] What Might Have Been

Several posters asked where has this team been? They've been right there all
along, being misplayed by the coaches.

I'll reiterate what I've been screaming for some time - When we blitz a lot
we win. When we play back, we lose. Cosgrove has got to have a high
percentage of blitzing to win. Pressure on the qb is essential, and we can't
get enough consistent rush from the front four. Every game that began with
the defense laying back, I started going nuts right then - I didn't have to
wait for the other team to score or even gain ten yards.

Concerning the Ganz question, Callahan says the qb doesn't need a strong arm
to run this offense. The main thing is knowing the system, what plays to
call, how to follow the progressions, etc. Then he picks the strong-armed
guy who has been in the system for one year and leaves the guy who has been
in the system for 3-4 years on the bench. I don't fault him, entirely.
Kellar does have an impressive arm and seemed to learn the system pretty
well. But look how much better Ganz looked with his better knowledge.

So what could Callahan have done to figure this out? Exactly what Dick Karre
(and maybe some others) said - Callahan could have played Ganz during
games we were getting blown out. Callahan is stubborn, but Cosgrove makes
him look like an apologist.
