Lane Kiffin, head coach of the Oakland Raiders and son of Monte Kiffin was on the Jim Rome show today. They talked about a lot of stuff and came around to Nebraska. Rome asked him straight out that if Nebraska had offered Monte the job when they fired Solich, would he have taken it. Lane said that yes, his dad would have taken the job. Rome's follow-up was "Would he take it if it was offered now?" Lane said he couldn't answer for sure but thought that yes, he probably would, that's how much he feels for Nebraska. Rome's final thought on the matter was that "If they wanted to hire a NFL coach, Kiffin was the one to hire. He was and is far, far more respected than Bill Callahan."
Monte Kiffin was 63 at the time of the last coaching change. He is 67 or 68 now. He is one of the most respected coaches, and one of the most respected defensive minds in the NFL. Hiring him now would mean bringing in a great coach, but for how long? Maybe until Turner is ready. (Actually, he's ready to be a head coach now, which he is, just maybe not at Nebraska with all the pressure. It would be great to be able to watch him a few more seasons to see if he is any good at it.) It would be an interesting hire, let Turner work at Buffalo a few more years, come back as Assistant Head Coach again, and take over for Kiffin when he is done. I'd vote for this over Bo Pellini.
