I too played in the early 70's.  Boy did that salt pill comment bring up 
memories.  We use to see how many we could swallow at one time after 
practice.  We didn't get to drink water at practice either.  We did have a 
break in the middle of practice and they would give a cup of what was called 
"saline solution" with ice in it.  It was really just salt flavored kool 
aid.  They made sure we drank it all and gave all the ice back.  You had to 
run extra sprints if you tried to sneak a piece of ice.

I think long practice with no water was just the mentality back in those 
days.  Funny thing is I don't remember anyone over heating in those days. 
Maybe we were all to scare we would be called a wuss or something else. 
Anyway,  glad to see those kind of training ideas are not around anymore.

I know this has nothing to do about coaches getting fired but I can relate 
to what Todd was saying.
