I should have worded it differently..
Pat, I don't totally disagree with you that the timing was bad. If it were
to be done, it should have been done before 2003 or after 2004, but $$ Bill
had already let him stay another year. Pedey clearly wanted him gone the
year before that and outside of competing for the NC, I don't think he was
going to keep Frank no matter what.
Regarding the 9-3 season, it was quite a farce. We beat about 9 BAD teams
and got smoked by 3 good ones. Were we improved, yes. Were we anywhere
near where we needed to be, no. Would Solich have ever been able to get us
there, I don't know, but I don't think so. Once he was given the chance to
rework his staff, he probably should have been given another year or two to
see if it worked or put another way, "To prove it wouldn't work" like Pedey
believed it wouldn't.
Just like Solich in 2003, Pedey's timing caused BC to have very little
chance of 'pleasing' the fans at NU. He was coming into a situation that
was very hostile because of how Pederson handled the whole thing as well as
Pederson putting on the kiss of death with his comment, "I refuse to let
this program gravitate toward mediocrity and surrender the Big XII to Texas
and Oklahoma."
The only benefit of this season, IMO, is that there will be little
discussion as to whether or not BC should be retained and the new coach will
most likely be welcomed with open arms. That, and it certainly has made
Tom's decision pretty easy.
Hopefully that makes more sense.
