The article I read originally (the one referenced by Joe) was apparently 
a sidebar to the main article regarding LP's sentencing. That article 
was indeed a nice story - in the sense that the author took some pains 
to depict the real human being behind all the crap. But even that just 
highlights the tragedy of it all. I don't know what anyone (other than 
LP himself) could have done to change the outcome.
