During the middle of the season in 2006, many were posting praising the improvement of the team. I posted a supposition, "Could this team beat the 2003 team?" I felt that yes, the team was improved, but only from the depths the Callahan-led staff had taken them to. I felt the team wasn't any better than the one BC inherited. I went on to say that I felt that we had made a poor hire and that Callahan would probably not be our coach at the start of the 2008 season.

I was vilified for that post. I was accused of "wanting the team to lose", of how I "was going to be so proud of myself if I turned out to be right", of not being a "real fan", of being "an example of the poor quality of fans that Nebraska has". One person even called me a troll.

Well it turns out I was right. I'm not proud of myself at all. What I genuinely don't understand is why so many who know so much about football didn't know this as well, because I was certain of it. (Not the date, but whether he would be successful or not.) So was my 86 year old mom. During the 2004 season, we were talking on the phone and we both agreed that there was something not right about Bill Callahan and we agreed that this might well be a disaster. (So Mom was right as well, and she isn't proud of herself either.

The Callahan defenders and apologists lasted well into this season. They still attacked those (including me) who weren't afraid to make it clear what their opinions were. I'm pretty sure they were angry not at us for being right, but at themselves for being so badly and blatantly and publicly wrong.

The GROC bandwagon became the party bus when Pederson was fired and BC's fate was sealed. It's no longer needed now. The "I hated Callahan before it was cool" tag line was a take off on the t-shirt slogan "I hated Bush before it was cool." That one went over some heads.

So the coaching issue is over. The program is now a punch line in every joke. The players must feel like crap. (Particularly since it MUST be their fault. After all, the head coach has done an excellent job in every area and has complete faith in his staff. Sorry, I couldn't resist.) It will be great when the season is over and this head coach is fired. There won't be any debate on whether we need a new coach or not this time around. The new coach will be greeted with welcoming, open arms. Give us a good one, Tom!
