[Husker] Husker Baseball

I don't come out of the woodwork very often on this list, but this
baseball discussion got to me...
I guess I must be the only one not quite ready to write the Huskers off
completely? I think it's easy to say that they've severely
underachieved this season, but that's only how it looks on the surface.
According to everything I've seen in the last week, this squad has now
played the second toughest schedule in the country.
Also, since the Big XII is ranked as the second toughest conference this
season (behind the SEC), we're struggling more than usual to pick up
wins. However, series wins against Baylor and KU (two of the league's
bottom-dwellers this year) are still possible, as is finishing above
.500 in the conference. A strong finish would definitely aid in the
post-season tournaments. Yes, I believe the Huskers will still make the
NCAA's despite their record -- at last check their RPI was about 22nd in
the nation -- and I am looking forward to catching some of the games in
Lawrence (about 30 minutes from KC) next weekend...
Anyway, like I said I bristled a bit at the statements being made. I'm
not saying that fans aren't entitled to their expectations, but I feel
that unless you're realistic you'll be disappointed! Also, I can't help
but draw comparisons in my mind between the expectations that some fans
now have for the baseball program after a few CWS appearances and those
expectations that were prevalent for the football program after our 60-3
record over five years from '93-'97. I think we just need to enjoy the
games, support the team on the field, and be proud of the program that
we now have. I think we all know that it hasn't always been like
this...

I will agree Bob, the wheels are coming off a bit. I will say though,
their
postseason chances are far from over. If they lose both of these last
two
series, then yes. By the way they played last night, there's not much
hope
of winning either.
Most projections still have them as a traveling 3 seed in a regional.
That
being said, winning the last two series would just about lock that up.
If
they can't win these two (against the two worst teams in the league)
then
they will pretty much be done.
It seems pretty clear that Anderson has lost these kids and they aren't
playing pretty lackluster at this point. Too bad for a season with some
pretty high hopes. I'm not saying I expected championship, but I
thought
for sure we'd host a regional and probably go on the road for the Super.
Oh well, in the words of every Cubs fan, maybe next year.

It would seem the Huskers post season goose was pretty much cooked
at Haymarket Park last night. The Huskers lost 9-2 and it really seemed
worse than that. I am not sure what the problem is this year. It just
seems they are vastly underachieving. This is not the greatest team Nu
has ever had but they should be playing better than they are.
