Having worked as law enforcement for a period of time I can tell you that it
is a one sided, imperfect science and extremely impartial (and one sided-I
mean, biased). From what I have seen, the victim was a friend of one of the
officers that reported to the scene (bias); the victim is a bouncer (door
man) makes him above the clientele, and probably a known friend of the local
police. (some of the police, not talking beer buddy).
The victim, probably a cocky little sob; had an opportunity to mouth off to
a cocky young NU football player in front of his young naive girl friend,
alcohol may or may not have been involved (my guess it was). Bad blood had
already been spilt between the two already; for what exactly we may never
know, but it had something to do with not getting into a bar by the victim.
Fight breaks out (assault); girl friend jumps into 2 grown boys wrestling
and punching and got smacked (battery).
Police arrive; victim and police immediately greet each other. Purify sees
this as a gang land attack upon himself and becomes agitated (resisting
arrest). Everything after that point becomes black and white-whatever Purify
does is and was wrong, the only thing Purify could have done right was sit
down and shut up. He probably didn't do either one, resisted arrest, and the
rest became history.
Also note; whoever wins the war, tries the other for war crimes. This works
the same way for most assault & battery cases. I by no means want to
belittle the police, there job is hard enough without anyone second guessing
them all the time; but this kind of bias happens all the time, and it is a
survival mechanism. We have the court system to protect the wrongly accused
if this is the case; Purify will hopefully learn some real life lessons. I
am sure he was not teaching Sunday school on 'M' Street when some big bad
bouncer came up and started picking on him and his flock.
I can tell you, there is a lot more to a story then the facts; especially
the facts in a single police report. That is what the good bottom feeding
lawyers are for; they are the ones that go and get the facts, LOL.

That is correct as a technical matter, but news media typically do not
honor the distinction. The newspaper accounts make it pretty clear that
Purify is accused of "battering" a couple people.
