I think before we banish him to the Netherlands, we should wait and see -
I'm sure we all have been involved with two sides of every story. It always
surprises me how eager people are to try to ruin someone else's life - well
maybe not ruin, but punish in a public way - anyone else for transgressions. (
Duke Lacrosse players etc.) Whenever Osborne was criticized for his handling
of the Phillips case - he seemed to think ( and I wholeheartedly agree) the
best place for these players that get into 'trouble' was within the confines
of 'the team'. I know playing football is a privilege and these kids need to
realize they are in the public eye, but give them the chance - just like any
other student - or human being - should get.
Do the Huskers still use a point system or does anyone know how these type
of things are handled at NU or other places? Sounds like the Wherle
situation was a buildup of things over a period of time. Does all of NU athletics
use the same 'system' or is it up to coaches? I know coaches have ultimate
authority - he could never see the playing field again after running stairs for
days, but it seems for legal reasons there would have to be some kind of
plan.. And of course for Legal/Privacy reasons - we may never hear Purify's
side of the story.

If the charge remains as just assault, remember that this means Purify
did not actually injure or touch anyone. Basically, yelling at someone
to the point they felt uncomfortable, confronted, or threatened, is
assault. I'm not sure just what happened, but if there were an actual
physical element to this incident there would likely be battery
charges attached also.

So, it's fine with me if anyone thinks Purify acting in an aggressive
or threatening manner (which is all we can infer from an assault
charge) merits dismissal from the program, but I did want to point out
a common mistake that is sometimes made: that assault implies some
kind of physcial element. (Keller's uncivil behavior a few weeks ago
over a parking spot were also assault, but not batter).
