How about some numbers to contrast the "I think" part of this thread:

(from 2006)
"CBS’s 26 tournament telecasts averaged a 6.3 rating — with an average
of 6.959 million households watching — down 9 percent from last season
(6.9), but up 2 percent from 2004. The NCAA tournament championship
game between Florida and UCLA drew an 11.2 Nielsen rating for CBS, down
25 percent from last year’s final."

(from 2007)
"The first three days of "March Madness" telecasts -- Thursday, Friday
and Saturday -- averaged a 5.5 overnight household rating/12 share,
according to preliminary data released Sunday by Nielsen Media Research.
That's up 2% from 2006's 5.4/12 and the best three-day average since the
5.5/12 in 2002."

2005-6 college football bowls (partial):
Alamo - NU vs Mich, 5.41
Peach - LSU vs Miami, 5.22
Capitol One - Wisc. vs Aub, 5.18
Holiday - OU vs Oregon, 5.06
Rose - USC vs Texas, 21.7
(average of 4.46 for all 28 bowls, by averaging individual games ratings)

IMHO, a college football playoff involving 8 or 12 or 16 teams would be
a much larger ratings/advertising event than March Madness.
