I disagree that "ten wins would be remarkable and nine would be pretty
darned good". (I assume this refers to the regular season record.)
The two toughest games appear to be USC at home and Texas on the road.
If NU can't win at least one of those games, then NU will finish
another year outside the top-10. If NU wins one of those two and drops
another game to finish with 10 wins, that might be pretty darn good.
If NU loses both those games and loses to another team (which given
NU's schedule almost certainly would not be a top-10 team) to finish
with 9 wins and in the bottom half of the top-25 rankings, that's about
the minimum that I think most fans would deem acceptable and far short
of pretty darned good. If NU can't get it done this year with an
experienced QB, what are the prospects for next year with an
inexperienced QB? NU needs to show some "stuff" this year and the
right "stuff" is at least 10-2 in the regular season.
