The current Royals regime is a little different now than in years past.
While they still have many of the same small market woes as teams like
Oakland and Minnesota, their current owner and management are far more
willing to commit dollars to improve the quality of the team on the
field. They have invested heavily in scouting and player development and
the recent signings of players like Meche have shown they are spending
some money. While it hasn't necessarily translated to more W's at this
point, the Royals are definitely more competitive on the field than they
have been in quite some time.
And with a $350 million renovation to Kauffman Stadium soon to get
underway (and completed in 2010), the Royals will be able to enjoy some
new stadium related revenue streams that they will hopefully reinvest
back into the product on the field. The formula is simple:
Stadium Renovations = More Revenue = Better Team = More Fans = Even More
Revenue = Even Better Team
If I were a Royals fan, there definitely would be some reason for
optimism.
