______________
I was a welder for many years, and in most cases the only or the only
other woman in a huge shop full of men. I learned early on that if I
painted all my tools and my tool box PINK, that not only did no one ever
just take and use them without asking, but only the truely desperate
would ever ask to borrow a tool from me. I even painted my welder pink!
I found it amazing how the color pink seemed to be a male repellant....
One co worker (female) discovered that PURPLE seems to have much the same
effect as PINK.
I said something about painting my old one ton Chevy truck pink (well,
dusty rose) once, and the first things said was, "but then it
would look like a GIRL'S truck...!." and then "..... oh, yeah...."
My hubbie worries about our eldest, because he likes purple, and kitties,
and painted one of his model trains purple, and found some tiny kitties
to ride and "drive" the train. I don't worry. He just knows what he
likes, and I feel I've done a good job not making things so cut and dried
"this is a GIRL'S toy! this is a BOY'S toy!"
After all, I was a little girl who liked trains and hot wheels cars, not
dolls! And I think I turned out OK, more or less. --Cecilia G.
