Not surprised I got that comment from you, Bob.  :)
Here's my rebuttal.  ;)

The reasons behind my feeling that it was well-deserved were that they
finished 4th in a very good conference, ahead of Texas A&M, a #1
regional seed, and some other factors.  From the various RPI and
strength rankings there were very few teams ahead of them that didn't
get in and several below them that did get in.  OU is one of the more
notable ones, and they should have made it by most estimations, but
their conference finish probably did them in.  So you string all of
those factors together - winning conf record in a strong conference,
good 2nd half finish, tough schedule, 30 wins, and a decent RPI - and I
don't think that's a bubble team.  If you only look at the won-loss
columns, then I can see where NU could be considered lucky to have made
the tournament.  But that's not the only criteria.  So there you have
it.  :)

But I'd rather have the worrisome conundrum of whether or not they'll
get a national seed like a few years ago when NU's RPI stunk to high due
to 22 games against 100-250 RPI ranked teams.  NOT that I want them to
play that kind of a schedule again, but wondering what the end of the
season needs to look like to lockup that top 8 seed is more fun than
wondering what it needs to look like to make the tournament.
