The Yankees (Scranton) moved Joba Chamberlain to the bullpen yesterday (to
get him ready for a call up probably this week or next. FYI, if it's this
week, he'll face Alex Gordon and the Royals).
His first action in relief @ AAA Scranton:
1IP 0H 0BB 3K
Doesn't get much better than that.
Just for the record, his total AAA line is:
6IP 4H 1BB 13K
I love this story. Think back to the year before he came to Nebraska. He
really wasn't that great, just a big guy with a pretty good arm. His 3-6
record with a 5.23 ERA wasn't turning too many heads. Childress / Anderson
bring him in and he turns into a good prospect with some injury problems.
He would have been a solid top 15-20 pick, but his injuries dropped him all
the way to #42 with the Yankees.
Nobody really expected him to shoot up into the majors. Even when he was in
Hawaii dominating with like 40-50 Ks to 3 walks, people were talking about
this guy that had potential to be in pinstripes in a few years.
Then single-A, dominated. AA, dominated. AAA, well the stat line says it
all. I realize none of those levels are the equivalent of the Red Sox
hitters, but just three short years ago, he was an average Division II
pitcher with a plus fastball. Now he's first in line on the bus to Yankee
Stadium. Part of the Yankees plan to make a late season run at the post
season. Just an absolutely amazing story.
