Dick's post has drawn a remarkable number of shoot-from-the-hip responses.

It will never cease to astonish me how some folks can read a 
newspaper account of a complex incident and blithely assume that they 
have ALL the pertinent facts in hand. As a former teacher of 
Journalism, I assure them that they do NOT have possession of all the 
pertinent facts from any newspaper story.

Further, having assumed knowledge of all the facts, some seem to feel 
that Divine Guidance or perhaps another Mystical Power has endowed 
them with the inalienable right to act as judge, prosecutor, jury, 
and (on occasion) executioner.

Oddly enough, a system to deal with untoward incidents already exists 
and is fidrmly in place. As cumbersome as it usually is, it remains 
far superior to kangaroo courts and lynch mobs.

Judge in haste, repent at lesiure.
