[Husker] Ray Scott, et al

Ray Scott had a GREAT radio voice, even in 1992, and was, as someone else
noted, a real pro. I'm not at all surprised that he read cold copy dead-on
perfect, and with perfect timing. Those are skills that are hard to
teach, and I've always had a bit of admiration for the on-air talent, I've
done just enough radio work and known enough people in the business to know
how hard it is to be really good on-air.

But I never felt Ray had the same kind of connection with or depth of
knowledge about the team that people like Lyell, Kent, Don, Tim or even
Warren had. (Warren Swain did have midwest roots, and he lived and worked
in Omaha during the years he was doing the Huskers games.)

If they had brought in any other nationally-known voice, including Keith
Jackson, I'd have felt the same--just a hired gun. (Keith had one trait
that always annoyed me, he consistently referred to the Nebraska halfback
as a 'tailback', not an 'I-back'. He never quite got past that Southern
Cal influence.)

But if anyone asked me for a list of the top 5 people in sports I'd like
to spend some time with, Keith Jackson would be on my list.

PS. Let us know when your book is out, Rich, that sounds like a good read.
