Hello Husker Fans,
JV> 2. Are Husker Hoops fans really THAT disappointed by the Big
JV> Monday blowout last night? If they are I don't think that they
JV> should be. Kansas is generally considered one of the most talent
JV> laden teams in the land and a legit national title contender
JV> should they develop any sort of consistency. I don't think there
JV> is a single Husker hoopster who would crack the top 7 or 8 in the
JV> KU player rotation and certainly none that would crack the
JV> starting 5.
I am not disappointed they lost. I was just disappointed how bad they
looked in the first half. It was one of the least competitive games
I've seen in a while. That being said, I'm still very excited about
Doc and I like the idea of having him as our coach. One game
certainly isn't going to change that. I'm not even really worried
about this season.
Also, Maric would be in ANYONE's top 7 in the Big XII. After that,
you're probably right. Maric's biggest problem right now is the lack
of supporting cast, IMHO. We have no real threat other than him, so
teams drop down the double and triple coverages every time he gets it.
JV> 4. Don't read too much into players leaving early. While some (Evans,
JV> Newcombe, Dailey, Beck) etc transferred for reasons that related to
JV> playing time and conflicts with coaches the others have simply left for
JV> an opportunity to make some money. Brandon Jackson didn't leave early
JV> because of a lack of tradition or because he hates Bill Callahan - he
JV> left because he comes from a dirt poor family in Horn Lake, MS and as a
JV> 3rd round NFL draft pick or better he can give his family some level of
JV> financial freedom.
I couldn't agree more. Kids left early during the Osborne era all the
time (especially the last 5 or 10 years). Yet for some reason, people
just like to ignore that. Plus Brandon did what's best for him. It's
not because he didn't play in the bowl game that much, he had a
freakin broken hand with a cast! In fact, I have more respect for
Cally that he decided not to risk this young man's promising future to
win a bowl game. I would be willing to bet (I have no real knowledge,
just a hunch) that to a certain degree Coach Callahan saw a kid that
could go pro and get his family out of poverty and didn't want to risk
that over a bowl victory.
JV> 5. Lastly, while this nature of the business world vs Husker tradition
JV> parallel seems like just another way to rehash the Solich - Callahan -
JV> Pedersen debate here is my take. Tradition and core values are important
JV> - be it in business, family or Husker Football. However, sometimes
JV> traditions and core values, especially in business, need to change with
JV> the times or be left for dead. A business, family or football team that
JV> doesn't dynamically change and find better ways to do things is destined
JV> to fail. The ultimate key to success is changing and adapting while
JV> still holding true to those core traditions and values.
JV> The real traditions to me of Nebraska Football have nothing to do with
JV> the coach or what offense we run. Husker Football tradition to me is the
JV> Sea of Red at Memorial Stadium, a Runza or a slice of Val's, Sidetrack's
JV> before the game, having the best fans in the nation and the Saturday
JV> afternoons I spent with my dad and my grandpa cheering on the Huskers
JV> win or lose. Those are the traditions that I will pass on to my sons and
JV> hopefully them to theirs and over that time I guarantee that Athletic
JV> Directors, coaches and offenses will change over and over - but those
JV> traditions that I hold dear will not.
Don't know if I could have said that better myself. Great work!
JV> But of course these are just my takes - I coud be wrong.
In the words of one of the wisest men I've ever known, "I may not
always be right, but I'm never wrong."

JV> Greetings,
JV> I just had some miscelleaneous comments and notes on Husker related
JV> topics:
JV> 1. The baseball team was picked to finish 3rd in the B12 Preseason Poll
JV> by B12 Coaches. Texas was picked to finish first, followed by OSU, NU &
JV> Baylor. Nebraska opens their season February 16 against New Mexico in
JV> Arlington, TX.
JV> 3. Jay Norvell leaving to be the OC at UCLA is a lateral move in title
JV> only - not in responsibility or in what it will take for him to get his
JV> own head coaching job. UCLA is an up and coming program with a very well
JV> respected up and coming coach in Karl Dorell. This move is great for Jay
JV> if he hopes to become a head coach.
JV> Jeff
