Grew up in Gibbon, NE and graduated from the school formerly known as Kearney State back in '88 (UNL-K just sounds so wrong). Just turned 40 and live in Clarksville, TN/Fort Campbell, KY
Husker football has always been a family thing. Some of my earliest memories are sitting around at family reunions (always Thanksgiving and New Years) with my great grandfather and dozens of other relatives huddled around the black and white TV watching football.
Before cable TV came to town, we only got one or two games a year (could only pick up NTV out of Kearney or KOLN out of GI) - dad and I listened to KRVN (I think) most weeks.
The first game I got to attend was Syracuse in '83 - I remember stomping them and then being utterly dismayed that we could lose to them the next year.
Had the pleasure (?) to be home this year for the Cotton Bowl and had gameday all planned out and then the dang ice storm wiped out power. We made a mad scramble to the Big Apple bowling center in Kearney and watched with a couple hundred other central NE refugees. It was a good time - other than the game of course!!!
I've had my Husker "battle flag" for about 20 years now and it has flown over such lovely places as Taegu South Korea, Guantanamo Bay Cuba, the Sinai Peninsula and Tikrit Iraq. I've met hundreds of troops who are Husker fans while stationed oversees who see my flag and come knocking.
Strangest Husker story was crossing the Suez Canal on my way to Cairo for a weekend off. The local kids try to sell you all kinds of things, and when one little "business man" saw my Husker shirt, he came running up with Husker hat - cost me $2. Amazing
I joined the list in '93/94 while stationed in Colo. Springs. It was the source of info, especially on a 14.4 baud modem!!!
I've been to Cuba in '95, the Sinai Peninsula in '01 and Iraq this past year. The list becomes my Husker life-line everytime I deploy since bandwidth is always limited.
I really miss Horwich (sp), Mays and the like. Remember the game breakdowns that would get posted each week prior to the games? Who to watch, tendencies, etc. Man that was good stuff.
For the past few years it seems we've tilted toward just rehashing what's written in the papers/ESPN than original thoughts - other than the whole FS vs. BC vs. SP crap that polarized the list to an extent I never really thought Husker fans would devolve to, but it's still Huskers so ...
Anyway, Mike you're my hero. Thank you so much for all that you do to keep this going.
Terry Webster
