I'm trying to remember when I first got on this list;
I think I participated through nebr.sports.unl back in
the middle 90's and then eventually moved to the
e-mail list. I've always felt this list had a much
higher signal-to-noise ratio than most of the other
Husker forums, though the last few years have been a
little noiser. (I'm sure some folks consider me part
of the "noise" :-)
40 years old, and believe it or not, actually live in
Nebraska. My parents have had season tickets in the
north stadium since before I was born, and in this
family, Husker football is almost a ritual. I was
lucky enough to attend a few games over the years,
usually non-conference blowouts, though I was lucky
enough to get to attend the 78 NU-OU game where Billy
Simms fumbled at the 3. My dad was impressed that I
could name the entire offensive line even though it
was the only game I saw in person that year, and in
those days, the names weren't on the back of the
jerseys.
I'm impressed by the folks who follow this team from
afar, especially by people with no apparant connection
to the University or the state.
I was lucky to get season tickets myself about 15
years ago when they converted some student seats to
the general public... just in time to see a freshman
named Tommie Frazier take over at quarterback. Over
the years I've been graced with the ability to follow
the team to such exotic locations as Lubbock,
Manhattan, Ames, and Waco. I've almost been trampled
after games in Ames (twice), Columbia (almost hit by
goal posts leaving the stadium), and Pasadena (just an
incompetently organized event). I've had the joy of
heckling Lee Corso in Tempe after the 96 Fiesta Bowl,
only to get heckled by frat boys in Tempe 9 months
later after the debacle in the desert.
This has actually turned into a great thread, as we
get to know a little about all the names that come
through the mailbox. Sometimes in the heat of debate
we forget that the folks on the other end share our
same passion for the Huskers, even if we may see it a
little differently.
