Well, today is my 58th Birthday and my earliest memory was of Nebraska
ending Oklahoma's 74 game conference winning streak in 1959. I also
remember a very bad 1960 Nebraska team beating #4 rated Texas in Austin
(a repeat in 2007 would be nice). The coming of Bob Devaney in 1962 was
a huge emotional lift to the program and the entire state of Nebraska.
It is hard to describe the feeling of having basically 18 losing seasons
in 20 years and then all of a sudden, just by changing coaches, they
start winning 9-10 games a year and playing in major bowls almost
immediately. As a teenager, I was a Nebraska fan right down to the
N-shaped red corpuscles coursing through my veins.
I feel a little like a traitor to Ohio State since I went to grad school
there in the early to mid 1970s but I loved Florida pounding them last
night. Living in Big 10 territory for 35 years as a Nebraska fan will
do that to you. Let's all hope that recruiting finishes as well as it
started and next year is another one of those turnaround years. Nothing
will compare to 1962 though.
