Another 50+ lister weighing in - I'm 58. Got interested in college football
when my cousin was playing QB at (gasp!) Colorado in the mid 50s. I'd
listen to Colorado games and Husker games in my Dad's blacksmith shop in SW
Nebraska on fall Saturdays. I vaguely remember the upset of the Sooners in
'59. Dad was a Husker fan from way back, so we were thrilled when Devaney
went 9-2 in '62 and earned the Orange Bowl berth the following year.

It's been a great ride. I was attending UNL during Devaney's "lean years"
('67,'68) and his final years when the Huskers won their first two National
Championships. At the age of 23, I didn't appreciate how special that was
until it took another 23 years to win the next one. The euphoria of '94-'97
was SO sweet after all of those close calls. I also didn't appreciate what
an extraordinary feat it was for the program to maintain the 9-wins-per-year
level of success for 30+ years. The program's recent history has been a
dose of reality, but I'm learning to manage my expectations. I like the
direction the program is heading; think there is a pretty good coaching
staff, but can't say that I feel the current leadership is likely to kick
off anything like the run from '62 to '02. But given the way NCAA FB has
evolved, no one else may do that either.
