Kicking is truly one of the elements of the game that is discriminated
against. When kicking becomes too easy, the rules makers get together to
make it more difficult. I Imagine the thought is runbacks, not touchbacks
make the game exciting. Touchdowns, not field goals make the game exciting.
Thus when field goal kickers were becoming very succesful they narrow the
goal posts. Kickers were still successful, so they removed the platform tee
for Field Goals and Extra Points.
Too many kickers were putting kick-offs into the end zone, so they were
moved back five yards. This year, the tee for kick-offs was lowered from 2"
to 1 " again to decrease the number of touch-backs.
I do know that Dan Young was a very good kicking coach. Scott Downing did an
adequate job with the kickers. I am not sure who is coaching the kickers
this year, if it is part of Busch's special teams or if someone helps out.
