Saban's current contract with the Dolphins has either 3 for 15M or 4 for
20M left, so depending on what the Bama deal is, keep in mind he is
walking away from 1M to 1.5M dollars PER YEAR if he decides to leave for
Bama. His Dolphins contract is also structured so that he has no
financial liability if he does in fact leave.
As for being "set for life", it depends. First, contract buyouts are
rarely done at the full per year value of the contract. Typically the
buyout language would pay say 2M per instead of the full 3.5M or 4M.
Second, it is not as if you receive a lump sum of money like winning the
lottery. The buyouts are typically paid as an annuity, and if you take a
new job that annuity typically ends. It isn't as if you could get fired
after 4 seasons at Bama, get paid 4M a year from them for 6 more years
AND get paid 2M or 3M annually from your new employer.
FYI.
