Much at the urging of his wife, Solich did interview for the MN job
prior to the time of Mason being hired. In response Osborne named
Solich as the "assistant head coach" and conveyed his wishes in
confidence to Solich in order to keep Solich on his staff -- namely that
Osborne would step down in the forseeable future and endorse Solich as
his successor...

Not that I recall, though he was reportedly offered the Northern
Illinois
job and, as the story goes, was named assistant head coach at Nebraska
(and in effect heir apparent to Osborne) as inducement to turn that
offer
down.
