Perhaps those with some real playing/coaching experience can correct me, 
but I've always thought that when the receiver was heading toward the 
middle of the field - particularly on quick slants - throwing high 
should be avoided because it exposes the receive to a hard hit on the 
ribs and makes an interception more likely.  Throwing it low on such a 
slant may prevent yardage after the catch (there were none to be had in 
the case in question), but it makes an int extremely unlikely.
