I'm not sure what I am supposed to take away from this.
People have been fired or asked to retire from the program in the
past? I don't think anyone disputes that.
I won't speak for anyone but me, but to me this "issue" about
Ostergard is not about whether Ostergard "deserved" to be fired, or to
be retained. I have no information regrading those matters, so I
strenuously avoid forming an opinion. I am giving SP and BC (and
whomever was actually DO's formal supervisor) the benefit of the doubt
that there was some actual cause behind the "decision to go in a
different direction".
My only issue is that, if in fact DO was not told of WHY he was
released ... well to me that indicates an absence of respect and honor
that I had perceived was formerly present in the athletic department
(or at least the football coaches' offices) and that I had hoped would
be an enduring thing. Now, perhaps DO was in fact told and he's
painting this in the way he is in order to cause trouble and generate
sympathy and take a shot at those who released him. Since I also do
not have that information, I can't rule that out.
All I can say is, that if DO is telling the truth, and the release
happened as he described it, then I'm worried, and I'm alarmed, and
I'm disappointed, and I don't like it.
