I wouldn't bet that Callahan could have done that at the Alamo
Bowl that
particular year. From the experience he presented the next year,
he
would have not been willing to use the strengths of the players
and it
would have turned out to be a fiasco. After all, he could say
(like he
did for most of the time he was at the helm as a "proven" coach
that it
was all Solich's fault.

Happy New Year,

Bob

I guess we'll never know. I don't know too many coaches
that would for one game make sweeping changes. For one there
wouldn't be time to implement the changes. The next year was a
little different. Callahan had spring practice, fall camp, and
the season to implement his program. But, generally speaking
most assistants could take their team and win one game as Interim
Head Coach assuming they are not playing against a vastly
superior team.

Maybe I just have a memory lapse but I honestly don't
remember Callahan blaming Solich for anything and certainly not
"most of the time". That is not to say he didn't say some
questionable things but I don't remember him continually blaming
Solich.

Sincerely,

Bob Beach
