Bob, you are correct in that Devaney knew he was going to retire
and started
grooming Osborne.
and TO did the same with Solich. At some point Pelini has known
he wanted to
be a HC. Now I'm assuming here. That Pelini has told his bosses
that he
wants to be a HC. So does his boss or bosses start prepping him ?
Also TO is
AD so let's again assume that TO will take him under the wing so
to speak.

You make a good point and what you say may have happened. I
guess I just see a retiring Head Coach grooming someone to "pass
the torch" to as being a totally different situation than a Head
Coach that has an Assistant that desires to be a Head Coach. For
one thing the retiring coach has a compelling reason to get his
hand picked successor ready. On the other hand it is totally
different thing in handling an Assistant that just feels he would
like to go somewhere and be the Head man.

I believe TO will be a positive influence in the transition
to Pelini. The big thing is, as has been discussed before, TO is
AD and not Director of Football Operations. At some point he is
going to have to turn his attention to other sports as well.
Very few ADs get involved in the day to day handling of a given
sports team. Most ADs feel that is why they have a Head Coach to
take care of those things. I am sure if Pelini seeks him out TO
will be there but I doubt you are going to see TO at practice
every day, at team meetings, and etc. If he is indeed going to
do that he just should have coached himself. Come to think of it
I would have been on that bandwagon big time. :-)

Sincerely,

Bob Beach
