and Miles.

It sucks that he's never had any good bosses to learn from.

   You and I both know we are talking about two different things. 
 On one hand we are talking about a guy being an assistant coach 
under a great Head Coach or Coaches.  On the other hand we are 
talking about a guy being hand picked and groomed for the 
subsequent Head Coaching job and shown the ropes.  Devaney knew 
TO was going to be his replacement.  TO knew, or at least hoped, 
Solich was going to be his replacement and they were groomed 
accordingly.  I doubt Seifert, Carroll, Sherman, Solich, Stoops, 
and Miles were grooming Pelini to be the next Head Coach.  If 
they were they failed miserably because Pelini moved on.  
Learning football is one thing.  Learning how to be a Head Coach 
is an entirely different thing.
