Well that would depend on if they wanted to be coaches or not. Not all great or even good players aspire to be coaches when they are done playing. I think the reason most people think good or great players would make good coaches is because they seem to have a knowledge of the game and that is kind of a requirement to being a good coach.

Why do you think that great players can't be great coaches? There are so many contradictions to this in real life that listing them would be pointless. Just one example is Steve Spurrier. He won the Heisman Trophy and is in the College Hall of Fame as a player. And he is one hell of a great coach, make no mistake. Not sure where you are going with this.
