Hawaii was never considered a top team because the perception is that
they play a weak schedule, not just a weak non-conference schedule. To
be considered a national contender, Hawaii will have to schedule a
tougher non-conference schedule (as Fresno has done over the years) to
compensate for their conference schedule.
As for Georgia, you argue that they deserve a shot at the MNC because
they were higher ranked than LSU and lost ground when they didn't even
play. I would argue that the voters (because the polls largely determine
this) merely rectified their prior mistake by elevating the better,
more-accomplished team. And then you have the "Nebraska" problem: How
can a team play for the MNC when it wasn't good enough to play for its
conference championship?
Personally, I think the BCS probably got it just about right this time.
