The situations are far from comparable, because there was no overtime
in 1983/4. But even with overtime, sometime it still comes up. I remember
Chuck Amato going for the win with the 2 point try at NC State a few
years ago. Minnesota went for 2 in the 2nd overtime against Northwestern
this season, when kicking the PAT would have gotten them into a third overtime.
In fact, that game was one of the factors cited by the NCAA Rules
committee in recommending that the NCAA institute overtime procedures
for bowl games, which of course was quickly extended to all college games.
Although most of the after-the-fact coverage of that game repeats the
mantra that a tie would have assured Nebraska a national championship,
the history of the voters back then suggests that may not have been the
case.
I'm old enough I still remember the controversy over the 10-10 tie
between Michigan State and Notre Dame back in 1966.
