My memory is that TO said his team had the chance of being known as one of
the greatest ones ever (at least up until 1984) and going for a tie never
entered his mind. I also remember (IIRC--I am also getting older) that TO
put the emphasis on playing fully up to your ability rather than winning. I
also remember some years earlier when Notre Dame went for the tie against
Michigan State and won the NC that this was a controversial decision hat did
not win a lot of respect--at least among those I spoke to. I was proud to be
an NU fan that day in 1984 even though it hurt. It's a different sort of
focus but one in conformity with the NU motto IIRC.
