He contributed to a steady rise in the offensive production, for one
example. From http://d1afootball.com/stat.php, under Total Offense, here is
where the 'Huskers ranked:
2003: 83rd (OC: Norvell)
2004: 69th (OC: Norvell)
2005: 96th (OC: Norvell)
2006: 14th (OC: Norvell)
2007: 11th (OC: Watson)
Of course, this isn't the statistic that matters -- only the points on the
board at the end of the game do -- but it is clearly indicative of an
improving trend. The 2003-05 examples also show the effect of sacking the
entire offensive staff. There is no continuity; players must learn a new
offense from scratch; and production suffers.
OTOH, by keeping Watson as OC, there is at least some continuity and
stability for the returning players, and Bo has the chance to keep the
offensive production trend going positive, while he concentrates on fixing
the defense (which I think we'll all admit was our glaring problem in 2007).
