I don’t know about you but my gut hopes he hires Bo Pelini. Gill’s
talents are there, no question. But I just feel somehow that the Nebraska
program (and the state) needs Pelini, the fiery general. After all, we’ve
already had one before. He was that coach from 1962-1973, won a couple
national titles, established success in the Husker tradition. Johnny
Rodgers played for him. You know, that one coach. (Ha, Ha).

Anyway, some people wonder if Pelini would be able to handle the “CEO”
side of head coaching. Some worry that Pelini has never been a head coach
at any level before. Well, I believe Bob Stoops never was a head coach at
a Division I program before he went to Oklahoma and he hasn’t been too
shabby. Osborne himself was an assistant under that one coach – the
legendary Bob Devaney – before he took on his first head coaching
position.

Plus, here’s another thing to think about. The football program is down.
It needs a boost – an injection of fiery, passionate,
kick-butt-because-I-love-you leadership. No disrespect to the Husker
tradition/fan support of the 20’s through the 60’s, but when was the last
time Nebraska was struggling to have an identity, that competitive edge.
Try 1961. Who came in to replace Bill Jennings. Oh yeah, that one coach.
That fiery general. The one who handpicked Osborne...Devaney.

The program needs that toughness again, that fire inside. The program
needs Pelini. The best part about all of this: We all know for a fact he
can deliver. Too bad it was just for one year (2003).

Suddenly, it could be more.
