[Husker] Recruiting

Both Mike and Alan make good points.

The first years reflected an inordinate number of JuCos because the staff
perceived a great talent deficit. The first group of JuCos hardly counts
because the top players had been picked over. The staff recognizing the
talent left was not top-flight brought in marginal JuCos rather than
marginal high school players; first because they should have been more ready
to play and second because the scholarship commitment was a shorter amount
of time. However, I do believe had Jordan Adams not been sick he eventually
would have unseated Joe Daily.

Remember also the kids that used to come in as prop 48's no longer can start
their academic career in Lincoln. They must graduate JuCo first. A lot of
these guys are coming in as three to play two or three to play three guys,
giving the luxury of developing them if necessary. In other words, it is not
a lot different than the old days when a player developed for two or three
years and then played meaningful minutes.

Also I believe Callahan's philosophy the last two years has been to take the
best player available. Most of the recent JuCos have been rated among the
best players in the nation. These players have had a chance to develop
physically and have played against some of the top players in the country.
It is normally more apparent whether these players are great players or
whether they maxed out in high school. It seems that we are getting some
amazing players in this round.

It appears we have a good start at developing "high learning curve"
positions in house. Right now, we have a nice stable of quarterbacks and
offensive linemen. This allows us to bring in the "difference maker" skill
position player.

One other note on the high numbers. It would be interesting to know the
number of prep school players that are on the various rosters. The East and
Southeast schools place their non-qualifiers in these prep schools rather
than JuCos. Some of these "schools" like Hargreaves are a joke, their only
raison d'être being to get players eligible.
