There's a couple changes in JC recruiting philosophy that make it a better
deal than it used to be.  If you can get the kid to enroll by January, he
goes thru Spring practice and summer workouts and it's like having him for 2
1/2 year instead of two.  Even better, quite a few of these kids (Zach Lee
and Larry Asante, to name two) have three years of eligibility, and since
both came in time for Spring, they are almost 4-year players. (Lee still has
his redshirt year, so he really does have 4 years to play 3.  Even for those
without a redshirt year, if they enroll in time, it can be nearly four years
of practice time. 

There are more reasons, but I'll leave it at that.
