Unfortunately, I doubt it will be any time soon. I assure you that I
am no huge fan of Cox, but KETV is the party being ridiculous here.
KMTV (Omaha CBS affiliate) had a similar (stupid) argument with Cox a
few years ago and the only thing that turned it around was the fact that
KMTV's dinosaur management got replaced by people who actually had a
clue. Most local affiliates are smart enough to realize that their main
source of revenue is advertising, and the more people who are exposed to
their signal, the better off everyone is. Unfortunately, the owners of
KETV don't understand that simple concept.
The good news is that KETV eventually may not have much of a choice.
The current deadline for ending analog broadcasts is February 17, 2009
(although the FCC has pushed it back several times before). At that
point, I think KETV is either going to have to give in and let Cox
retransmit their signal, or the vast majority of Omaha will not be
watching them. While this deadline doesn't apply to cable providers,
KETV will not have an analog broadcast for Cox to transmit, which is
what they're currently doing.
And while this week's game may not be in HD, I'm sure that there will be
a decent amount of Big 12 games that are. Regardless of who you feel is
right or wrong, the real loser is the consumer.
