I was a sophomore in HS when that game happened. As luck would have it, we
had our major marching band competition that Saturday in Minnesota -- but I
wasn't going to let that deter me. I brought a 5", black and white,
portable (in the sense that a concrete block is "portable") television, and
several of us were sitting around on the lawn watching the game after we
performed.
And we could all see that the State Penn receiver was badly out of bounds.
On a 5" TV.
In direct sunlight.
In black and white.
The band parents told us we nearly got penalized by the event judges for
yelling about that call while another band was on the field. We didn't, but
goshdarned if it wouldn't have been worth it. As it stood, it was a long,
gloomy ride home. We also watched Syracuse upset Nebraska 17-9 in the
Carrier Dome two years later. Should have learned my lesson and left the
stupid TV at home my senior year ... 8^)
(As a postscript, later in my sophomore year, my band director handed me a
picture in the local paper of a kid in a South Sioux City band uniform, head
down near the ground, hands around the side of the TV,
slightly-less-ample-than-it-is-now posterior sticking up in the air,
watching the game. No idea who that kid may have been ... 8^)
